Urban Promise - TR One (NiceandNasty)

Here’s a review of a new TR One release on Dublin’s NiceandNasty records. I unwittingly submitted it to Resident Advisor not knowing that they don’t publish reviews of digital-only releases.

Title: Urban Promise EP
Artist: TR One
Label: Nice and Nasty
Cat Number: NANO 20
Genre: Techno

Mystery Train (instr)
Cancri
Liberate
Detroit after Dark

Nice and Nasty hails from Dublin, a city not necessarily known for it’s techno proclivities. However, with acts such as TR One making themselves heard, and other labels such as FVF, Leopold Bloom’s stomping ground at least has the potential to make it’s mark. Like the UK, which in spite of having it’s fair share of great artists has never really provided a caring home for techno, Ireland, and Dublin in particular, will always produce artists and labels of worth but aside from a few outposts of burning enthusiasm the genre will be criminally under patronised.

The Urban Promise EP is a sophisticated piece of work, from the stoned beats of ‘Mystery Train (instrumental)’ whose lazy, hazy lo-fi ambience recalls Moodymann’s soundscapes to ‘Cancri’ which uses a wormhole of an acid synth line to burrow deep in your brain, this is a varied and atmospheric release that is grand in scope and evokes a multitude of influences, each one slightly more subtle than the previous. If I say that ‘Liberate’ makes me feel like I’m strolling through a fantasy landscape with a citadel around each corner, each one more impressive than the former, then you’ll have to take my word for it. ‘Detroit after Dark’ is a rumbling sinister affair, and my least favourite track on offer. Easy listening it isn’t, but it contrasts nicely with ‘Mystery Train . . .’ and provides an unpredictable finish to a well-balanced EP.

A label that’s been around for a while but now seems to be gaining a head of steam, the future’s looking good for Nice and Nasty and TR One.

January 2008 News

First thing to say is we didnt win anything at the Slick-DJ Irish Dance Music Awards; however, we had a blinding night and offer congrats and respect to those who won, especially Edwin James (Corrugated Tunnell), Eddie Wray and Bodytonic. Secondly, well done to Raymond C and Jay Grogan for putting on a dam fine spread. It was cool to see some people that i’d lost touch with and make some new friends.

On the music front, Nice & Nasty has some cracking new tunes coming out in Feb and March. Out now is T-Polar’s RedLed Industri[mix]es - an online exclusive of Belfast’s wonderboy of IDM remixed by Teknik, Nasty Bobby and more. Marco Bernardi’s EF,NG online ep is doing fab - Dave Clarke is playing Sausage machine; Sunil Sharpe gave it thumbs up, especially Tormentor; and, marco as Octogen won album of the year in DJ mag so when the remixes of EF,NG and PLastic Spanner come out in March on vinyl and as a download they are sure to rock the discotech! Remixes courtesy of Timmy Stewart, Matador, Aruba, Arne Weinberg, Tomas Jirku, T-Polar, Indo Phunqe and Katsuhiko offer something quality for everyone.

Other bad boys include our first release from Sweden’s Kenny Black under the guise ‘A Diff’ Kinda Brotha’ and remixes of his Detroit-jackin’ Tracys Revenge by Sunil Sharpe, Mike McCoy, Katsuhiko, String and Nasty Bobby.  The Katsuhiko and Nasty Bobby remix wil feature on a split 12 (vinyl) with Heretics of Disko’s Feelin electrified remixed by Lackluster and Yuki:o whilst T-Polar and Soul ADs remix wil also be online.

Finally Nice & Nasty is working with Detroit legend Terrence Dixon, local boys Tr-One and Dagham & Remlab on some future sounds for Spring. Watch this space.
